Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe DATE CHANGE TO March 3rd

Well, with no significant snow in the forecast for the next week, we have made the decision to postpone the event to our back-up date of March 3rd.

NOTE DATE CHANGE! The popular and highly anticipated Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe will take place on March 3rd 2012! Join us at Camp Saratoga for a nighttime ski or snowshoe under a full moon and 2.5 miles of candlelit trails. We will be starting earlier this year at 6:00 to give families with younger children a chance to come out and enjoy the magic of the Preserve & Park on a moonlit night. Thanks to our sponsor the Wilton Rotary for their support of this wonderful event. Snowshoe rentals will be available from 5:30pm at $5 a pair.

Have you seen our threatened friend, the Blanding’s Turtle? Join us for a talk with post Master’s student Andrea Chaloux as we talk about her latest findings in the most recent Blanding’s Turtle study in the Wilton area. Learn about the history and the future behind our For the first hour we will hear from Andrea and get our questions answered by our local expert. The second hour, we will take a walk through our wetland parcel (Neilmann) to discover what Blanding’s Turtle habitat would look like in the winter. Snowshoes will be available for rental: $5 for nonmembers. If there is no snow, the program will take place without snowshoes.

X-C Ski Trail Conditions 1-25-2012

The groomed trails are anything but groomed. Recent warm weather and rain events have left a surface of solid ice, small ponds, dirt and a bit of hard snow. The trails are not suitable for X-C skiing now.
There is no way to make this surface usable without the addition of significant snow. Expect continued deterioration unless a significant (6 inch) snowfall occurs.

Homeschool Series: Animal Adaptations

Looking to add some outdoor winter activities to your homeschool curriculum? Bring your kids to Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park to discover the outdoors and learn about the adaptations that animals in order to survive changes in the winter. The indoor part of this program will be about 30 minutes long and the outdoor part will be about 40 minutes long. Please dress appropriately for weather and insects. The same program will be held both days to accommodate schedules. Snowshoe rentals will be available: $5 for nonmembers. If there is no snow, the program will take place without snowshoes.

Explore the beauty of Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park during a beautiful winter guided hike. Come learn about the history behind our unique ecosystem of Glacial Lake Albany and the park’s current efforts to protect endangered and threatened species living at the preserve. Children will learn to use their senses to explore the outdoors during winter by working to complete a nature scavenger hunt. This program is designed for children 5 and older. Join us at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park for a small stroll to collect nature items. Afterward, we will create picture frames using the nature materials that we have collected! Please bring a printed picture that you would like to put in the frame! This program is for children of all ages. This activity will take place at the WWPP Office on Scout Road according to the weather

Directions: From the Wilton Mall (Exit 15 on I87), go north on Route 50 for about four miles. Make a left onto Scout Road. Go straight under the railroad bridge until the crosswalk and make a right into Parking Lot #1.

If you would like to learn more about Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park, the Annual Meeting is the perfect opportunity. There will be short reports on the Preserve & Park’s past year in conservation, environmental education, and in recreation. Everyone is welcome.

We are still excited to be celebrating our 15th year as Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park! So even though 2011 is drawing to a close, our anniversary year is still a cause for celebration. Join us for a festive gathering to share in our success not only of this past year, but of the past 15! The Reception will begin at the close of the Annual Meeting, at approximately 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Come create a nature mosaic to hang at your window! This project encourages young kids to appreciate the different shapes, colors of leaves and the value of nature. Join us as enjoy an afternoon stroll through the Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park. Then, we will use our creative side to make a nature mosaic masterpiece! This program is for children of all ages. Wetland communities are very fragile and delicate ecosystems. Come explore the wetlands at the Neilmann parcel with Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park! We will be meeting us at the Neilmann parking lot on Ruggles Road just south of King Road at 10:00 am for an hour-long exploration. Please dress appropriately for weather and ticks. This program will not take place if there is rain.

Directions: From the Wilton Mall (Exit 15 on I87), go north on Route 50 for about four miles. Make a right onto King Road. Continue and make a right onto Ruggles Road. The parcel entrance and parking lot is on the right side of the street.

Fall Thanksgiving Craft Sat, Nov 19th

What better way to be creative than to make your annual craft in a different way. Join us for a small stroll as we collect things from nature to make our own version of a turkey for Thanksgiving. The stroll will be approximately 20 minutes and the craft will be approximately 40 minutes. This program is for children of all ages. This activity will not take place if there is rain.

To Camp Saratoga North and South Trails:

From the South: Take the I87 North to Exit 15. Go north on Route 50 for about four miles. Make a left onto Scout Road. Go straight under the railroad bridge until the crosswalk and make a right into Parking Lot #1. For both trails we will meet in the parking lot.

From the North: Take the I87 South to Exit 16. Take a left onto Ballard Road, cross the Northway and make the first right on Edie Road. Continue for 0.6 miles and make a turn at your first left onto Scout Road. Drive down Scout Road until you reach Parking Lot #1 on the left side of the street

Have you ever been curious about the pines and oaks in your backyard? No matter where you go at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park, you will find lots of pines and oaks due to our pine-oak savannah habitat. During this beautiful mile long walk through rich pine-oak forests, we will discuss the different pine and oak species and how they have adapted to various landscapes. Please dress appropriately for weather and ticks. This program will not take place if there is rain.

To the Fox Parcel:

From the South: From the Wilton Mall (Exit 15 on I87), go north on Route 50 for about four miles. Make a right across the street from the “U” shaped parking lot marked as “Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park”. The Fox Parcel parking lots is rectangular shaped and across Route 50 from the Old Gick Farm Trail.

From the North:Take the I87 South to Exit 16. Take a left onto Ballard Road and drive for 2.1 miles. At the traffic light, make a right onto Route 50 and drive 0.7 miles. Make a left across the street from the “U” shaped parking lot marked as “Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park”. The Fox Parcel parking lots is rectangular shaped and across Route 50 from the Old Gick Farm Trail.
