Kalabus-Perry (County Forest)

Ownership

The parcels of Kalabus and Perry are owned by Saratoga County.

Trails

The main Kalabus-Perry Trail meanders about 3.5 miles through 234 acres of Saratoga County-owned lands on the Wilton-Northumberland town line.

Mountain biking is incredibly popular at Kalabus-Perry and additional trails have been put in place for mountain bike riders. Riders can experience single tracks, bridges, seesaws, and balance beams over mostly flat acreage.

History

Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park is located on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican, Mohawk, and Abenaki people. The Perry parcel is in the Town of Wilton.  It was purchased in 1961 and is 130 acres.  The Kalabus parcel is 104 acres and is located in the Town of Northumberland.

The trail was built by BOCES forestry students in 2010 at minimal cost to the county.

Description

From the trailhead on Gailor Lane, a dirt road off Homestead Road in Northumberland, the trail crosses a stream, goes up and downhill and has a large grove of oak trees as well as logging roads that make for easy walking.

Uses

Kalabus-Perry is open to the public from dawn to dusk.  Unleashed dogs, dumping, unauthorized vehicles, fires, and camping are prohibited.  The trail allows all non-motorized uses, including hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing.  Hunting, fishing, and trapping are permitted in season in accordance with NYS DEC rules.

Directions

Thank you to our volunteer trail stewards Bradley Birge, Jim Sculli, and the BOCES Environmental Conservation and Forestry students, plus Saratoga County for keeping these trails clean!
